NBC Ruins an Entire Game

Fans who attended the Jets-Raiders game in Oakland on Nov. 17, 1968, got to see something that the folks viewing at home missed: a little thing called the end of the game!

The match went back and forth each quarter, and with 1:05 remaining, New York held a close lead. The game was running long, so a honcho at NBC then made a move that still holds a place in the Annals of Dumb Decisions: The network cut to a commercial, and cued up the movie Heidi.

As stunned fans at home watched the fictional adventures of the little Swiss girl, the Raiders squeaked ahead to a 43-32 victory.

To be fair, one reviewer of the Heidi program noted that “Some of the scenes between Heidi and her grandfather and uncle are quite touching.” This was little comfort to the angry fans who swamped the NBC switchboard. Their ire forced the network to publicly apologize.
