Chapter 4
Power in reading
In chapter three we discussed the importance of how words can positively impact you. I hope that you also noticed in that chapter, that although at that stage in my life I was a little older and just a little wiser but still went through some adversities nonetheless. However, I hope you saw in that chapter that the way I handled myself and how I dealt with those adversities were a little different than the previous chapter, to say the least.
I hope at this point of the book you’ve realized the underscoring message I’ve been trying to hammer home to you. Words really are powerful and can instantaneously change the direction of your life by using something you’re already born with and completely have the power to use right now – decisions.
I’ll open this chapter by trying to give an example of how words and decisions have a unique symbiotic connection with each other and how you can easily and almost immediately apply them to your life now. It’s not like you haven’t done this already – perhaps you just haven’t taken advantage of the God given power you already have at your disposal.
Example: You ask for directions on the street because you’re lost. You see someone standing on the street and you ask for directions to such-and-such place. The person says, “Oh yea, that place? Sure I know where it is. Make a left on this corner, go straight for two blocks, then make a quick right and you’ll see it.” So now, you do exactly what the person just told you to do, except you don’t see the place. Out of frustration, you decide to just use your cell phone’s navigation app. Sure enough, you realize that the person gave you the wrong directions… you should have taken a right on the corner, go straight for two blocks, then make a quick left.
Now you start walking back the same way really fast, huffing and puffing, upset that you were given the wrong directions! While walking back, you encounter the same person who gave you the wrong directions and can’t control yourself from angrily and sarcastically asking, “Why did you give me the wrong directions? You could have simply told me that you didn’t know where the place was.” The person surprised at your accusation says, “I know exactly where the place is. I told you to make a left on the corner, go straight for two blocks, and then make a quick right!” You say, “No, I did that and it was the opposite!”
After arguing with this guy for some time, them calmly coming to a resolution with certain facts that you didn’t know upfront, it all now makes sense now. Come to find out, for him, left has always meant right and right has always meant left. Ok, now it’s all very clear on what just happened here! See, if people got to choose their own meaning for words, then no one would ever understand each other and life would be a lot crazier.
