Subplots create sympathy:
Subplots allow the reader to root for the main character and hope things will turn right. In Harry Potter, the Nimbus 2000 has been confiscated. The reader hopes Harry will get it back. Earlier in the story, the reader rejoices when Harry receives the flying broom as a present because the broom will open doors for him. The subplot in relation to the Nimbus 2000 is like a roller coaster of emotions and it makes up cheer for Harry and then feel bad for him. The subplot makes us feel closer to Harry because we know how much the broom means to him.
