CHAPTER 8

When the next day came, Grey could tell his squad was nervous. Other players eyed them as they gathered outside the cabins. They even followed Grey and his squad to the battle warehouse, sitting at nearby tables when Grey’s squad sat.

Hazel let out a huff as she glared at the crowd. “Stalkers much?”

Some of the people who were staring at them turned around, as if they could pretend they weren’t planning to play bounty hunters in today’s battles.

“What’re we gonna do?” Finn whispered.

“Change your skins every game,” Grey said quietly. “Other than that, you’re gonna have to trust me until we’re in game.”

Kiri nodded. “Obviously we can’t even talk about our plans.”

“They will choke us out of practicing at this rate,” Hazel grumbled. “I’m so angry I could punch every single one of them. And then beat up Zach for doing this to us.”

“Eliminate them in the game instead,” Grey said. “Remember everything we’ve already worked on. That’s all we can do right now.”

Finn nodded. “Now I know why the actual game makes it so you can’t talk to enemies. All this drama sucks the fun right out of it.”

“Yeah.” Grey hadn’t heard many negative things about being here from Finn. This was the first evidence that the reality of this place was finally starting to sink in for his real-life best friend.

The day began in the usual way, with everyone being transported to the battle warehouse to stand in the ranked line while the Admin talked.

“Welcome to Day Forty-Three of Battles!” the Admin began. “Today is patch day. The game has been updated during your rest, and all aforementioned changes have been implemented on the island. If you notice any bugs, please notify me immediately after any battle by using the Report Bug icon available in your vision selection. We will work quickly to correct any issues, if they be valid and not in line with the patch’s intended working order. Good luck in today’s battles!”

The Admin disappeared, and the countdown began. Grey readied himself for a day that would be filled with the most difficult battles they’d ever faced.

The second Grey appeared in the Battle Bus, he said, “We’re going to Lucky Landing. No one goes there, but it’s good loot. If people watch us after elimination, it’ll at least take them awhile to get there, and we’ll have time to get gear.”

“Sounds like a good plan to me,” Kiri said.

“Luckily you’ve never shown a preference for a certain place,” Hazel said. “Some squads always land in the same area.”

Everyone began to jump out of the bus, so Grey and his squad did as well to blend in. The bus crossed diagonally over the island this time, heading from the southeast to the northwest. It was a good bus for Lucky Landing. He watched the pathing of the people in the air, and it didn’t look like anyone had followed them.

Yet.

“Six landing at Fatal Fields,” Grey announced as he observed the nearby landscape. “One at Moisty Mire. Two Flush Factory.
