Agent Kline parked the car. He got out quickly and went to the other side, opening the door for Faith. She took her white cane out first, planted it on the ground, and got out. He shut the door and said, “Would you like my arm?”

She hesitated. “Um . . . sorry, I’m not used to this. I always have Sissy with me.”

“Here, please, take it,” he said. “I don’t mind.”

“Okay. Thank you.” Her fingers wrapped around his bicep, and he started forward slowly.

As they walked toward the door, Agent Kline held on to her hand with his free hand.

She was close enough to smell his cologne. Was it Aramis? “We can speed up,” Faith said. “I can usually do okay walking a little faster.”

“Sorry,” he said sheepishly.

They finally made it to the front desk, where a receptionist said, “Hello there.”

“Hi,” Faith said. “I’m here to see Bea Murtaugh.”

“Just sign in here.”

Agent Kline said, “I’ll sign it for you.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

The receptionist said, “I think Bea’s in her room. They just finished bingo. If you hurry, you may be able to catch her before she takes her afternoon snooze.”

“Thank you,” Agent Kline told the receptionist. He began pulling Faith in the direction of Bea’s room.

“You can wait here,” Faith said.

“What?”

“I’d like to see my grandmother by myself.”

He sighed a little. “Okay. Sure.” He paused. “Do you need help getting to her room?”

“No. I know the way. Around the corner, second room on the right.”

“That’s where I found her,” Agent Kline said.

Faith awkwardly maneuvered her walking cane along the linoleum. She hardly used it and really didn’t know how. She reached for the wall and glided her hand along it. As soon as she rounded the corner, she covered her mouth, leaned against the wall, and let out a frightful gasp. Her breathing could hardly keep up with her pounding heart.

She pushed her windblown hair out of her eyes and tried to regain control of her nerves. She’d almost blown it.

Her palms were sweaty and she wiped them on her jeans. Removing her sunglasses, she pulled her shoulders back and walked the fifteen feet to her grandmother’s room. She leaned the walking stick up against the wall outside her door and knocked.

“Grandma? It’s Faith.”
