The Peripersonal Network in the Human Brain

In Chapter 5, I described a network of areas in the monkey brain that processes peripersonal space (see Figure 5.1). Figure 9.1 shows some of the peripersonal network in the human brain, at least as it has been studied so far.82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91,92 It includes a region in the parietal lobe that’s probably roughly equivalent to the monkey area VIP, and a region in the motor cortex that’s probably equivalent to the monkey polysensory zone. I suspect the network is larger. It probably includes other cortical regions and other structures beneath the cortex such as the putamen, but the data are incomplete as yet. Different studies show a mixture of different brain areas, and the ones shown in Figure 9.1 are the most consistent.
