In studies that began in 1979 at Princeton University’s Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) lab, extraordinary results were produced in a number of experiments over many years that strongly support the power of intention. This fascinating program, focused on evaluating the effect of human consciousness on machines, utilized a number of different machines carefully calibrated to generate random results. One machine, for instance, contained thousands of balls that, when the machine was turned upside down, would bounce off randomly placed pegs and ultimately fall into one of nineteen compartments. Another was a computer that spit out random numerals. Another was a small robot that swiveled around randomly on a small table. Each machine, without any human influence, produced completely random results.

The scientists, however, found that the intention of volunteers influenced the results produced by these machines at a statistically significant level (Dunne and Jahn 1992). The specific findings are compelling. First, they found the period of time between the expression of the intention and generation of results did not matter. When volunteers focused their intentions on a result, that intention could precede the running of the program by days. Astoundingly, the researchers also found that an intention expressed after the fact—after the machine had generated results—influenced the results to a statistically significant level. Second, they found that distance between the person or persons expressing the intention and the machine generating the results did not matter. A volunteer on the other side of the world could focus his or her intention on a machine and that intention would produce the same result as if he or she were draped over it.

Some other results are equally fascinating. The studies showed that pairs of people had a greater impact on results than a single person (Dunne 1991). They also found that two people in love have six times the effect of a single person!
