Avoid text such as “If . . . Then . . . Else” in the text of the basic flow, exceptions, and alternatives. “If” conditions often indicate business rules. Review each step to uncover any business rules that constrain action (e.g., “Only one Contractor is assigned to a Job”) or enable action (e.g., “When Job rescheduling is needed for reasons other than customer request, offer 10% discount”). Move these to the business rules document.

6. Test the steps for sequence and completeness.

• Check that the order of each step represents the common flow of events needed to achieve the actor’s goal.

• Be sure that you did not miss any steps.
