This kind of approach is directly opposed to structural-functionalism assumptions, where the subject is mainly interpreted as a “role player” and for which social reality is substantially produced by social organization, by its institutional structures. Interactionists instead emphasize the unexhausted process of social situation redefinition produced by each individual inside his network,

in which elements of “objective givens” and “consciousness” are continually interwoven. This process is clearer on the level of daily interaction and encounters which are dissociated from the formal organizational role structure but which constitute the real core of the institutional structure of society. (Eisenstadt, 1976, p. 199)
