Ideas for Fun: Go to a museum, be a tourist in your own town, get ice cream at a local diner, ride your bike, row your boat/kayak/canoe, go fishing, attend a random event in your town (mine has a BaconFest, you know I’ll be there!), participate in a 5K, go for a hike, go camping, take a day trip, complete a project around the house, send all of the mail and packages that have been piling up, try something totally adventurous like rock climbing or zip-lining.
Sunday … ahhhh, Sunday. The Sabbath day of rest for millennia is still our breath of air in the week. Sunday is the best time to refuel your self-discipline stamina by taking on some self-care rituals.
Fun is all about pleasure, in an active sense. Self-care is about pleasure in a restorative, peaceful sense. Active relaxation. Do things that relax you and make you feel good about yourself. The and is key there, as the activities must do both. No binge-eating ice cream and watching Netflix until your eyes are stuck open. How about a fresh manicure while you watch a documentary? And I won’t say no to a glass of wine.
A self-care routine is a great way to make sure you follow through, and the self-discipline junkie in you will love it. You can even have a checklist if you like. A bath, a shower, a shave, a haircut, all of those little luxurious grooming things we don’t necessarily get to every day of the week are good self-care fodder. So are larger self-care things, like steams, saunas, or massages. These are investments in your body, which is your main self-discipline instrument, and it’s the only one you have. Treat it well.
