It did not take long for Jack Burgess and the medical school basketball team to find each other. And once they did, they fit together hand in glove. It was Walthall to Burgess on the break, with a bounce pass to Hubbell or a lob to Thistlethwaite. Sometimes Burgess would hit Symmonds with a floater, or he’d feint right and then back-pivot left and hand off to a cutter. Other times he would hang around the post and then explode to the basket, banking in a layup. With each offensive set, he got to know his teammates better, learning their habits and predilections and what their eyes were telling him to do. And they learned the same about him. On the attack, he added an explosive quality, a gunslinger’s quickness, that boosted the team’s fast break.

All told, Burgess was nothing short of a revelation. Passes were stolen. Shots were blocked. Breaks were slowed. Textile-mill hotshots, used to double-digit scoring, found themselves unable to shake the four-eyed phantom with the funny accent who seemed to know their every move. Easy buckets suddenly grew difficult, tough shots became impossible, and self-confidence took a nosedive. For the opposing factory fives, church teams, intramural squads, and military outfits, shooters became passers, game plans became upended, and winners became losers. All of a sudden it was Hubbell grabbing a miss and firing off a baseball pass to Walthall, already streaking past midcourt. Or it was Burgess with a steal off the dribble and a quick pass to Symmonds, breaking for the basket.
