Chapter Twelve

Ysenda jolted awake and nearly jumped out of her chair before the pain in her leg stopped her and she yelped in surprise.

She managed to push herself up in her seat. Apparently, she’d fallen asleep and they’d all left her there. The fire in the hearth was down to glowing embers, so she tugged the blanket up over her shoulders and buried her face into the soft fabric as she closed her eyes.

If she could only banish that nightmare from her brain, then she’d be much happier.

She recalled having nightmares when she was younger, but they went away. There was no memory concerning what the nightmares consisted of, but she knew they awakened her at night screaming. Eli had slept in the same chamber with her back then, and she’d always woken Ysenda up with the same expression. “Dammit to hell and back, wake up, Ysenda.”

Ysenda had always awakened. The dream held few memories for her, but the ones she’d had ever since she’d gone on patrol had changed. Now she had visions of a pair of animal jaws clamping onto her arm. Sometimes, the jaws would clamp down on her leg, and even once, her head.

She had no idea what kind of animal it was. That was the oddest part of the nightmare. This animal, whatever it was, terrified her, yet chased her endlessly it seemed. Until it caught her, and the set of jaws snapped in front of her, ready to bite down. She never knew what happened after that because she always awakened.

Screaming. This is why she would never patrol on the ground. Horseback or tree was the only place she could feel safe. The only way she’d fight.

Lewis came down the staircase, a look of surprise on his face. “Ye are all right, lass?”

“Aye. Why do ye ask?” She rubbed the sleep from her eye, thinking she’d dreamed Lewis up with his hair askew about his head. But still as handsome as ever.

“Ye screamed, did ye no’?”

“Did I? I dinnae know. I just woke up from a nightmare.”

He took a log from the nearby basket and threw it into the hearth. “’Tis freezing here. How can ye stand to stay here?”

She arched a brow at him because it was a ridiculous question.

“Och, aye. I recall. Ye canno’ move on yer own, can ye?” Even in the dark, she could see the wry humor dancing in his eyes. How she loved that part of him. He loved to laugh and have fun, and his eyes always glittered with sheer joy.

She pursed her lips and shook her head.

“What was the nightmare about?” He stepped closer and pushed a thick strand of hair off her face.

“I dinnae recall,” she lied.

He chuckled. “Ye are lying again. Do ye no’ remember that I can always tell when ye are lying?”

“Nay. Ye canno’.” She glanced over at the hearth, watching the flames grow.

“And now ye willnae look at me. Another sign of lying. What was the dream about?” He sat in
