Lucas’s heart thundered as his vision tunneled after Juliana. He was already hard as granite, but the sultry look she’d given him crushed the last of his defenses. Not that he was trying overly hard to resist her.

Had that been an invitation for him to follow? He wasn’t going to wait to find out.

He hastened after her, leaving the ballroom without a second thought. Where would she go?

Upstairs? That was where he wanted to go. Her chamber, his, he didn’t care. Since he seemed to always find her in the library, he ought to go there.

He walked in that direction and caught a flash of yellow—the color of her dress—in the staircase hall. Veering left, he strode into the hall just as she was starting up the stairs. He practically ran to catch up with her.

“I thought you might go to the library,” he said as he came up behind her on the stairs.

“Is that where you’d rather go?” she asked, pausing. “There’s hardly any privacy.”

“There are a few alcoves. I tupped a widow in an alcove at a ball when I was twenty.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Do you think I want to hear about your past exploits? Don’t make me change my mind.”

He moved onto her stair. “I didn’t particularly enjoy seeing you kiss Emerson. And that was today, not thirteen years ago.”

Leaning toward him, she gave him a coy look. “Did that bother you?”

“You damn well know it did. Why else would you do it?”

She shrugged and ascended to the landing halfway up, where the staircase turned left. “I didn’t kiss him the way I kissed you.”

Growling, Lucas clasped her waist and drove her backward to the wall, pressing her against the wood with his body. “I’m glad, because I would have had to hit him.”

“That would have been incredibly inappropriate.” She slid her hand up his chest and twined it around his neck, pulling his head down at the precise moment he moved in to kiss her.

“But wholly necessary.” His mouth claimed hers, their lips and tongues wildly mating as he thrust his hips against hers.

She gasped, breaking the kiss. “Why? You can’t go around committing violence on my behalf.”

He cupped her chin, holding her as he stared into her eyes. “Because you are mine. Whether you realize it or not. And I want—no, I need—everyone at this bloody party to know that.”

“If you keep kissing me on the stairs, I daresay they will.”

With another growl, he kissed her again, this time quickly, using his teeth to pull on her lower lip just before he swept her into his arms and hurried up the stairs.

“Lucas!” she hissed. “This isn’t at all discreet!”

“The hell with discretion.”

He carried her directly to her chamber, but couldn’t open the door without setting her down. Swearing softly, he lowered her to the floor. She opened the door and held it for him.

He stepped over the threshold and barely pushed the door closed before she leapt on him. She pushed his coat from his shoulders in a frenzy.
