CHAPTER 15
NAINA
Itook Lucifer onto the terrace for a bit of sunshine and settled down to work on one of the round wrought-iron tables. My silly kitten chased his tail for some time and then curled up in a patch of sunlight next to me.
I wondered how I was going to explain his existence to Papaji, who had never allowed us to keep any pets. And then I remembered that it didnât matter if he didnât like Lucifer. I was going to move out of the house as soon as I got back. Iâd run away to some obscure town and find a way to leave the country even if I had to sign up to be a maid in Dubai. Okay, maybe not that, because I refused to leave Lucifer, but I was sure I could get a job easily at an ad agency, a real estate company or a five-star hotel. I was presentable and fluent in English, and I could ask one of my school friends for a reference in a pinch. Papaji had no idea Iâd still kept in touch with some of them.
My shoulders slumped as I realised that while my future held a lot of potential, it wasnât going to be easy to escape my present. I had no income or savings because Papaji had never allowed me to get a job. If I refused to do his bidding anymore, he was sure to kick me out of the house. That was how he had kept me tied to him - a bit of pocket money, and a roof over my head.
How the hell was I going to afford rent? And it wasnât easy for a single woman to get a tenancy in India because landlords thought single women were promiscuous and wild. Normally, fathers had to go along and convince landlords that their daughters were responsible enough to be tenants. I could never see Papaji doing that.
My eyes fell on Lucifer and I straightened my shoulders. I would get out of that house for his sake if nothing else. We would find a way to survive. Meanwhile, I had a wedding to plan. Just then, the butler arrived and set a fruit platter and an ice cream sundae on my table.
âHis Highness sends his compliments,â he said grandly and bowed.
âWhat is all this, Narsingh Ji?â
âHis Highness noticed that you hadnât eaten much at breakfast, and he doesnât want you to be hungry, Miss,â he replied.
I wanted to be upset at this high-handed forced feeding, but I couldnât. I just couldnât. Although the ice cream seemed a bit of an odd choice, I reached for the bowl happily. A scoop each of chocolate, vanilla and salted caramel. What more could a girl ask for?
âHe has also sent a care package for the cat. It has a few bags of kitten food, and some treats and toys. Iâve had it delivered to your room, Miss,â said the butler with a warm smile, before he left me to my snack.
