La Tablita 20th St, Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights 04 553 1212, latablitadubai.com; Dubai Healthcare City metro; map. This vibrant but quirky Mexican restaurant offers authentic Mexican street food and delicious margaritas, combined with welcoming staff and their resident DJ. Don’t miss Taco Tuesdays for unlimited scrumptious tacos (119dh). Sat–Wed 6pm-1am (Thurs until 2am), Fri 2pm–midnight.
Tomo Raffles hotel 04 357 7888, tomo.ae; Dubai Health Care metro; map. Above-average Japanese on the seventeenth floor of the Raffles hotel, near the tip of the hotel pyramid, with fine views in all directions. A trio of Japanese chefs (including a specialist sushi chef) whip up good, authentic food covering just about all the usual bases, plus wagyu steaks (from 135dh). Surprisingly affordable (mains 70–90dh) given the location, and there’s also a reasonable, and reasonably priced, drinks list, along with a big selection of (much pricier) sake (from 95dh). Daily 12.30–3.30pm & 6.30–midnight (rooftop bar 10am–1am).
SATWA
Al Mallah 2nd December St 600 522 521, walmallahuae.com; World Trade Centre or Al Jafiliya metros; map. A classic slice of Satwa nightlife, this no-frills Lebanese café churns out good shawarmas, grills and other Middle Eastern food at bargain prices (meze 12–20dh, mains 30–60dh) to a lively local crowd; the pavement terrace is a great place to people-watch. If there’s no space here, Beirut, just down the road, is very similar and almost as good. Daily 7am–2am (Fri closed from 12–1.30pm).
Picnic Al Badaa St, just south of Satwa Roundabout 04 344 4043; Al Jafiliya metro; map. This hidden gem serves some of the tastiest Arab cuisine – simple looking restaurant with no spectacular decor or atmosphere it’s a pocket friendly place for an afternoon (or late night) snack or dinner. Daily 9am–midnight.
Ravi’s Al Satwa Rd, just south of Satwa Roundabout 04 331 5353; World Trade Centre or Al Jafiliya metros; map. This famous little Pakistani café, between the copycat Ravi Palace and Rawi Palace restaurants, attracts a loyal local and expat clientele thanks to its tasty array of subcontinental standards – veg, chicken and mutton curries, biryanis and breads – although it’s no longer quite as absurdly cheap as it once was, with mains for around 16–25dh. There’s seating inside, but it’s more fun (despite the traffic) to sit out on the pavement and watch the street life of Satwa roar past. Daily 5am–2am.
FESTIVAL CITY
Belgian Beer Café Crowne Plaza Hotel, off Crescent Drive 04 526 9066, facebook.com/belgianbeercafedubai; map. This convivial Belgian-style pub-cum-restaurant serves mainly as a drinking venue, but is also a good place for a nourishing helping of traditional Belgian cuisine, usually featuring classics like Flemish beef stew or beef skewers marinated in Leffe Blond along with the inevitable mussels. Mains 70–195dh. There’s another branch at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Daily noon–2am (Fri & Sat until 3am).
Pierre’s Bistro & Bar, InterContinental Hotel, off Crescent Drive 04 701 1127, pierresdubai.com; map. Opened in 2018 by multiple Michelin-starred French chef Pierre Gagnaire, a comeback after closing his fine dining establisment Reflets. This chic bistro
