The road to Lonquimay
At Lautaro, 30km north of Temuco, a paved road branches east from the Panamericana to the small agricultural town of LONQUIMAY, 115km away, passing the entrance to the Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello-Nalcas en route and traversing Curacautín, the northern gateway to Parque Nacional Conguillío. There’s nothing especially appealing about Lonquimay itself, but the road there – running through a narrow valley overlooked by towering volcanoes – is spectacular, particularly the stretch across the Paso de las Raíces.
