Jaclyn
I woke late on the day Boone left for Hell Canyon. After I dressed, I ran downstairs.
âYou missed him. He left a half hour ago,â Hannah said.
âI need to talk to him.â
âHurry out to the barn. Ask Adam for a horse. He can help saddle it if needed.â
Within a few minutes, I mounted a chestnut gelding and headed into town. I pulled to a stop in front of Booneâs office. Relief filled me when I saw Outlaw waited for him at the hitching post. I tied the gelding next to him.
âBoone!â I yelled when I entered the office. My heart pounded as I searched for him.
âJaclyn?â
Relief flooded me as I ran into his arms. I apologized and told him I loved him. I didnât mean to say the words yet.
Still, I hoped he would say that he loved me. When he didnât, I held back my disappointment until after he left.
Once he was out of sight, I brought my saddlebags into the office and sat down at his desk. He might not allow me to travel with him, but I could help.
The map I studied was from the first trip. I double checked the calculations and created a larger more permanent map from my notes. The report I wrote was about the conditions we found at the proposed bridge site. As I remembered the canyon, I drafted some calculations based on my estimates of the canyon depth. We could add to the report when Boone returned.
I locked the office up and headed back to the ranch, feeling restless just like the times between trips with Papa.
As I thought about Papa, I cringed. I decided I should write to him. Hannah gave me an envelope and some paper. Then I sat at the table while she prepared lunch.
Dear Papa,
