CHAPTER SEVEN

A Saturday at the Bookstore

Around Halloween and her thirteenth birthday, something strange and unexpected happened to Mariah during my after-school class. She fell in love with a novel.

Mariah began her sixth-grade year with a big chip on her shoulder. She didn’t feel that her sixth-grade teachers liked her. She, in turn, didn’t give a damn about them. If it were allowed, one of her teachers would call her a bitch, Mariah felt. Every time someone said that she had done something in the classroom, Mariah got in trouble. Her teacher didn’t come to her and say, “Did you do this?” She simply assumed that Mariah had done these things, even though somebody else was telling the story. Mariah sulked at her desk, trying to stay out of her seasoned teachers’ radar as she looked for ways to infuse fun and excitement into what seemed to her to be the dreary routine of schoolwork.

But when Mariah discovered the novel that fall, something seemed to shift inside her. She decided there could be a place for her in school, for here was a book that called to her. Once Mariah knew she liked something, she could throw herself into it, the way she gave her heart to boys. She had just turned thirteen, change was in the air, and for once Mariah felt the sensation of finding in a work of fiction the excitement she so desired.
