Chapter 10

Nailah was running a little late. Her idiot car chose that day to have a problem starting. She’d threatened it, shouted at it, and generally had a fit because she didn’t know what was wrong. At last it started, and she couldn’t say why, but she wasn’t looking a gift horse in the mouth. Fifteen minutes behind schedule, she arrived at Khloe’s school to come sliding to a halt just inside the auditorium. Jack was already there.

As soon as they got Khloe moved into the mansion, it was also decided that she would attend a private school. The move turned out to be a good one because she was receiving special tutoring, and her grades had already improved. The new school included an excellent drama club, and Khloe had shocked them all by wanting to join it. Her bravery only allowed her to work on the set, but Nailah was proud of Khloe.

All that wonderfulness aside, Nailah didn’t know what to make of Jack being at the school. She came in a door several feet away from him, so he hadn’t spotted her. He stood at the back of the auditorium gazing toward the front. Nailah scanned the direction he focused on and picked out Khloe among the kids on the stage.

Her charge held a stepladder close to her chest while a boy about her age pointed to something stuck high up on one of the curtains. The boy waved a hand in front of Khloe’s face, and Nailah took a step in their direction and stopped. Jack didn’t move. He only watched.

Slowly, Khloe raised her head. Her beautiful hair fell back from her face, and even from Nailah’s distance, she saw the wonder in the boy’s eyes. He must have blushed because he pressed a fist to his nose, ducked his own head, and fled. Khloe, oblivious to the reaction she caused, wandered over to the curtain, used the ladder, and retrieved the bit of something on the curtain.

For a brief moment, she disappeared in the back and then returned without the ladder. Several of the kids said something to Khloe, which Nailah couldn’t hear, and she seemed to respond. Hope sprung in Nailah’s heart that maybe Khloe was coming out of her shell.

“Khloe.” Jack’s voice bellowed across the auditorium, and Khloe jumped before turning toward the sound. Her eyes widened, and her jaw went slack. That damn man should think before he shouted.

“Papa.” Khloe’s high-pitched voice echoed off the walls of the auditorium. She probably hadn’t meant to be so loud. A few of the girls spun around to see Khloe’s dad, and several dramatic sighs filled the air.

One of the girls zipped over to Khloe and grasped her arm. This time, she spoke loud enough for Nailah to hear. “Oh my God, is that your dad, Khloe? He’s so cute.”

Nailah glanced at Jack and chuckled. Now that was a blush. She considered going over to tease him about letting preteens embarrass him but waited. Khloe’s outburst was a one-time thing.
