Later that day, my friends and I piled into a car and drove to a Fuddruckers for burgers. Somebody took Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds’s Live at Luther College out of a hulking black album of discs and put it on the car stereo. Soon the initial chords of “Crash into Me” filtered through the car, the exact kind of song that, were I with a group of kids I was trying to impress, I’d have claimed to hate. It was too treacly, too earnest, too popular. It wasn’t punk. It wasn’t challenging. It was an acoustic guitar dude crooning about sex in the corniest way possible.

In another setting, I would have rolled my eyes, but not here, not with friends for whom I didn’t have to put on airs, not holding the hand of a teenage crush that this time was (finally!) requited and riding in a car to go eat burgers. Here I admitted that I loved this song, that I loved these people, that I wanted nothing more than to hold their hands forever.
