Cam didn’t like bringing up the rear.
He’d been in the army too long—or maybe he just hadn’t been out long enough.
Admitting that, he didn’t try to pass anyone. The trail was so narrow it would have been impossible. That probably helped him decide to stay in line more than knowing he’d look like an idiot if he took the lead . . . especially since he didn’t know where they were going.
He had a feeling God was reminding him he had a long way to go, and a desperate need to get there, when it came to being humble. The children liked him better when he behaved with some humility. Which meant he needed to get better at it. That might also be why his leg was throbbing like a sore tooth. It wasn’t bad enough to make him go back, but it made the going hard, uphill on a slippery slope.
It kept him humble. But God wouldn’t use a bear trap on a man, would He?
Probably not, but once the bear trap snapped, God was there in many ways. Cam was healing, which honestly was a miracle. But it had laid him low for a long time. That gave him a chance to get to know his daughter and nephew.
Nope, Cam did not believe God snapped that bear trap on his leg. God had an overriding interest in souls, not legs. If God did such a thing as set a trap, He was going to try and trap a soul. And that was a gift from heaven.
“This was where I saw the glint.” Utah stopped beside a boulder the size of a house.
“He was definitely here. Look.” Trace pointed at something over the far edge of this peak. Cam reached his side and saw how trampled down the snow was, and with a couple of steps he saw the boulder was on the edge of a steep downward swoop. There was plenty of mountain left that went way higher, but from this spot, they had to go down to get up.
The mountains rose and fell, sloped up, then down for a time, then up again. It was all broken up by boulders, trees, and cliffs.
“Look at this.” Cam tapped Trace on the arm, but he was already turning. Utah and Penny came to Cam’s side.
“Multiple parallel lines made by skis. He’s been up here a dozen times,” Trace said quietly, thinking, planning.
“Yep,” Utah said. “Those are the same marks as we saw the day Raddo burned down the cabin.”
“Skis.” Penny stared at the marks. “I’ve heard of skis for getting around on snow. Look at the way he coasts along the top. I am going to learn to ski. This is a great idea.” After a short pause, she added, “It burns my chaps that I’m learning something useful about getting around in the mountains from tracking this varmint.”
“We can follow him right back to his hideout.” Cam started forward. The land on this side was steep but smooth. The snow was still thick but packed enough that they could walk on it.
