In subsequent days we came to grips with these fish and the fishing. By the fourth day I was beginning to see the fish more easily and caught three bonefish while off on my own, without Hervé’s aid in spotting. They weighed 3.6, 4.1 and 4.4 kg (8, 9 and 9.75 lb) – I carried a hand scale and net bag to weigh them.

Three times that day I presented to bonefish and had other species beat them to the fly – two trevally and a big longtom. Several hooked fish were chased across the flats by blacktip sharks but managed to elude them. Sometimes I had to charge through thigh-deep water in pursuit of fish to avoid being spooled, despite having 200 metres of backing on my fly reel. Doug got bonefish of 3.6 and 4.1 kg (8 and 9 lb). By world standards, these are pretty big bones.
