Cassady washed the dinner dishes for the second time, her mind rearing up like a spooked horse. She was guessing she’d overstayed her welcome. She had read the disappointment on Seth’s face all afternoon. She wasn’t his type. No amount of cleaning up around his house made her the good, religious girl he’d want hanging around. And she had a feeling that if she tried faking an interest in his God, he’d see right through her. If he was having second thoughts about her living here, she would need an idea of where to go or another way to win him over.

She heard him come through the front door. He was looking for her. She needed more time. He had probably gone out there to figure out the nicest way to send her on her way.

He came into the kitchen. “Didn’t you wash those already?”

“I did.” She held up a coffee mug. “Then I tripped and spilt coffee all over them and the countertop.”

He stepped closer. “You didn’t burn yourself?”

“No.” She stepped away from the sink to demonstrate. “I’m good. No harm done. Nothing a little cleaning won’t fix.” His concern for her over such a little thing gave her an idea. She put her hands back in the sink and spoke up before he had a chance to talk. “You’ve been great about letting me stay all this time. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get out of your hair. I have an old school friend who I think lives in Maplewood. Maybe he could let me stay with him while I look for a job.”

“Do you think it’s safe to go back there so soon? What if Neville’s people find you?”

“I’ll be careful. They’re looking for easy targets, but I’m onto them now.”

He leaned heavily on the countertop and narrowed his eyes at her. “Look, I know you didn’t plan on spending the rest of your life looking after a couple of oddballs. I know at some point you have to move on and make something of your life. I just don’t trust anybody in Maplewood right now.”

Sensing his reluctance to let her go, she cherry-picked her words. “Seth, what’s the worst that could happen?”

He ran his hands over his face and through his hair. “Cass, it could get a lot worse.” He grabbed a sponge and scrubbed the countertop. “Is there anywhere else you can go? Any friends up in Landon Hill?”

“Not really.”

“How about Rutledge?”

“No.”

“Family?”

“I can’t go back to my dad’s.” She pulled the drain and dried her hands while he scoured furiously at a stain that wasn’t there.

He threw his sponge down and stared at the counter. “Then let me contact my parents. Give me some time. I don’t want to see you . . . get hurt.” She studied his face. He was genuinely worried. “I’ll make some phone calls tomorrow. Just wait until I’ve tried, okay?”

“Okay. If you say so. I’m going to shower.” Her idea might have backfired. What if he
