Kit wasn’t sure what to expect of the place where Alden’s mom lived. Would it be like a hospital? He was well aware of how nervous hospitals made Alden. But it turned out to be more like a neighborhood. There were tidy, well-maintained yards, and the houses, while small, seemed nice, with front porches facing the sidewalk and orderly flowerbeds. Alden parked the Prius and raised an eyebrow at him.

“Ready?”

Kit grinned. “Absolutely. Bring it on.”

Alden didn’t knock on his mother’s door, instead just opened it and walked in, calling out a greeting.

“Alden honey!” A woman’s voice rang out, and she was clearly happy to see her son. Kit made his way through the wide doorway and pulled the door closed behind him, balancing carefully. Alden had already rounded a corner into another room, so Kit followed to find Alden crouched next to a wheelchair, hugging the beautiful older woman who could only be his mother. Quicksilver gray-blue eyes met his over Alden’s shoulder, and she smiled.

“You must be the fellow sleeping in my bed,” she shook a finger at him. “Alden wasn’t kidding—you’re a giant.”

Alden turned to face him, shrugging sheepishly, and Kit laughed. The two looked so much alike, with their blond hair and pale eyes.

“Christopher Taylor, ma’am.” He held out his hand for a shake. “But everyone calls me Kit.”

She clutched the offered hand and patted it between hers. “Brenda Kaufman. It’s nice to meet you. Please sit down, I know those crutches can’t be very comfortable. Alden, honey, why don’t you put on a pot of coffee?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Alden smiled indulgently at his mother, then left the room.

Kit settled himself onto her sofa, which was dainty and covered with flowers, and nowhere near as comfortable as the purple monstrosity in Alden’s living room.

“How is he doing?” she asked almost immediately. “Is he taking his medicines?”

“As far as I know, he’s good.” Kit replied, puzzled. “Why do you ask?”

She shrugged. “I have a nurse who comes by once a day to make sure I’m doing what I’m supposed to, taking my medications and taking care of my prosthesis. He doesn’t have anybody. I worry.”

“Mom.” Alden came into the room, scowling. “Kit is not going to spy on me for you, so drop it.”

She shot Alden a fond glare. “Fine.” Then she turned her attention back to Kit. “And why are you staying with my Alden? No family or girlfriend to take care of you? Don’t men your age get married these days?”

Kit coughed to cover his surprise. “Maybe I will one day, Mrs. Kaufman. If I meet the right man.”

A single eyebrow raised, and again he was stunned by the resemblance between her and her son. She glanced over at Alden, who was studying his fingernails as though they were the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen, then her gaze returned to Kit. “Are you dating my son, Kit?”

His face heated at the loaded question. Obviously, the answer was no—but it seemed wrong to deny there had been anything between the two of them right in front of the man.
