VSL#3, a probiotic from Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc., of Maryland, contains four Lacto strains, (acidophilus, casei, helveticus, and plantarum) and two Bifido strains (longum and breve) as well as S. salivarius thermophilus. It has been studied in several randomized controlled studies and found to be effective for treating pouchitis (an inflammation of the ileal pouch created surgically in the treatment of colitis45) as well as IBS46 and ulcerative colitis47—all conditions associated with depression. It is administered in large doses of 200 to 900 billion CFUs.48
