Chapter Seventeen

ALEX TUMBLED out to the living room and collapsed in his chair. He had wanted what was happening in the kitchen, Marcus’s hands hot on him and their bodies pressed together. More than the simple physical reaction, Alex had craved Marcus, needing to mark him as his and roll around in each other’s scents until no one else existed. That was what had made him tense up: the realization that he could desire anyone other than Theo.

In the heat of it he almost jumped up from the floor to fling himself back into Marcus’s arms, but Marcus was enraged and beyond reason, and by the time he had walked out, Alex was calmed down enough to know that he was really in trouble.

His hands were still shaking when he called Sam.

“About damn time you called. I’ve left how many messages for you? And if you try to pretend that you just lost your phone for a month, I’m flying over just to pee on your favorite pair of shoes.”

Alex had to smile as Sam’s worried frustration assaulted his ears. “I’m sure you get a lot of practice at that at home.”

Sam laughed. “You bet I do. He keeps threatening to buy me a dog house for the yard but knows he’d be the one sleeping in it.”

Alex laughed so hard it hurt, his nerves hitting his emotions and toppling him over into a pile of hysterics.

“Whoa, boy, calm down!” Sam said when he paused long enough to hear her. “What the hell?”

“Things aren’t so good.”

“The crazy laughter tipped me off. What’s going on? I mean, aside from you freezing Marcus out, and him being depressed, and both of you living in Theo’s house?”

“When you put it like that….” Alex trailed off. “Okay, yeah, that. And, well, other stuff.”

“Don’t go overboard with the explanations. You might hurt yourself.”

“Ah, fuck.” Alex leaned back in his chair and rubbed his face. “He took me up on my offer to sleep with other people, and… it didn’t go over well.”

“It didn’t go—wait, tell me you didn’t piss on his head?”

Alex sighed. “Oh yeah. Totally. This morning, when he came down, I got very territorial. And I… damn, I didn’t expect it. I don’t feel that way about him.”

“Except that clearly you do.”

“Part of me does. He kind of made a point about that during the, uh, argument.”

Sam snorted, obviously reading between the lines. “So what happened?”

“He left. Didn’t take his car so I’m assuming he’s coming back.”

Sam was quiet for a while. “This really isn’t working out for you two, is it?”

“Did you really think it would?”

“He rattled your cage this morning, and now you are calling me, hoping I’ll tell you that you are totally in the right about everything. But I’m not, because the way this is going, it is going to mess you both up pretty hard. It isn’t healthy, Alex.”

“Maybe not, but I don’t know what to do about it.”
