THE POWER OF SETTING LIMITS

The first step in breaking the cycle is to set limits. When asked to do more than you can handle, reply, "I'd love to give my time to this worthy cause, but I can't right now." Or "I'd love to attend this social gathering, but I can't this month."

Some people find that they don't need to eliminate activities in their lives, but they do benefit from scheduling "just say no" days on their calendars. They block out a certain day (or portion of a day) to catch up on things. Then they decline any invitations or activities that come up that might interfere with this blocked-out time.

Some people use these days to catch up on the many little chores they've been putting off around the house. Others use this time for planning, reevaluating, goal setting. Still others use it to relax and prevent burnout.

Most people who keep enormously busy schedules, yet still manage their time well and don't procrastinate, have learned to pace themselves. Either they take breaks during the day, or they block out time weekly, or they schedule time to connect with people or to unwind or do whatever it takes to recharge their batteries.
