CHAPTER 5

HUNTER APPROACHED the table at Pazo, where Cameron waited for him. “Well, you are alive,” Cameron said and hugged him tight before taking his seat once again. “It’s not like you to disappear.”

“I didn’t. Don’t be a fucking drama queen. I’ve been busy.” Hunter ordered a soda from the server when she passed. “I’ve texted and taken all my clients.”

“Yes. But you haven’t been near any of us, and we’re all worried. The last time someone checked out like that was Ford, and he up and left. So I figured I’d call and get you to tell me what was going on. The others all wanted to be here too, but I told them to keep their asses away. Don’t know if they’ll listen, so the way I figure it, we’ve got fifteen minutes alone before we’re inundated in busybodies.” Cameron sipped from his glass of clear liquid. “Talk.”

“There isn’t much to say.”

“Hunter.” Cameron’s voice held a warning. “It isn’t just us who are worried. Carl is asking questions too. He’s just as concerned as we are.”

“I talked to Carl yesterday when he briefed me on my latest appointment.” Hunter accepted the glass from the server and flashed her a smile. Then he turned back to Cameron. “So what’s got his underwear in a twist?”

“He said you haven’t seemed focused.” Cameron took another drink. “There haven’t been any complaints from clients, and he said bookings for you keep coming in, but he’s worried. You haven’t been yourself and we can all see that, so again, what’s going on? Is it that guy you mentioned a week or so ago? The one you went to high school with?”

“Why would you think that?” Hunter asked as he picked up his glass.

“Because you won’t answer the question. If it wasn’t him, you’d say so. But you’re evading the question, so….” Damn, Cameron was turning into a regular Perry Mason. “Just spit it out. If there’s a problem we’ll deal with it.”

“I’ve been seeing Grant, and I like him.” Hunter gulped down the rest of the soda and turned his head to burp. He needed to drink more slowly.

“You know that’s a tough one. Guys fall in love, and either the relationship falls apart and they get their hearts broken, or they leave the business. It’s rare as hell for an escort to find someone willing to accept the rigors of our business. And I can tell you, I know more than a few guys who left the business for love and a few months later wished they hadn’t because the guy they left for wasn’t who they thought.” Cameron looked around the bar. “Real life sucks and not in a good way. This business, what we do, it’s the best life there is. We make money hand over fist, guys worship us, and at the end of the night, we go home.”

Hunter knew all that. “But don’t you get lonely? You’ve been doing this longer than any of us. Don’t you want to have someone special in your life?”

“I do,” Cameron said with a laugh.
