3 (tie). DEMOCRAT-REPUBLICANS. Four Presidents served a total of 28 years between 1801 and 1829. The first truly contested election, in 1800, brought sitting Vice President THOMAS JEFFERSON into the presidency under the Democrat-Republican label. Jefferson, JAMES MADISON, and JAMES MONROE rounded out the “Virginia dynasty,” serving 1801–25. JOHN QUINCY ADAMS also bore the D-R label, and served one term (1825–29) before the party split.

3 (tie). WHIG. Four Presidents served a total of eight years between 1841 and 1853. The Whigs only managed to elect two Presidents, but both of them died in office, with the result that there were in fact four Whig Presidents. WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON (1841) was the first President to die in office, and his successor, JOHN TYLER (1841–45), had to force the issue to be considered President, rather than merely acting President. ZACHARY TAYLOR won the election of 1848, but like Harrison, he died early, in 1850, and MILLARD FILLMORE (1850–53) succeeded to the presidency. After Fillmore was denied the nomination for his own term (and Winfield Scott lost the election), he was nominated in 1856 by the American Party (aka the Know-Nothings). The remnants of the Whigs then also nominated Fillmore, but his third-place showing marked the end of the Whigs as a party.
