TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL ASSET AND CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

Take steps to ensure a strategy is in place that provides guidance on the connection between services and infrastructure; how does our configuration enable the delivery of the Core Strategic Services.

Build an accurate inventory of asset information—this will require an investment of tools and time but will be well worth it. A good process operating with bad data will fail.

Relationships bring Configuration Management to life. Capture and then maintain the relationships between CIs and services, plus incidents with problems with changes and with CIs.

Make the Configuration Management Plan a required document and one that is regularly updated and delivered to the extended IT Service Management team, process owners, and business stakeholders.

Name owners for the Configuration Management process and empower them to enforce the necessary standards while holding the organization accountable. These individuals should be selected carefully and bring the right mix of experience, expertise, and communication skills. It is, and should be treated as, a key role in the business. A natural extension of this same concept is the designation of asset stakeholders who bring a unique knowledge of specific strategic assets and provide the care that must be taken to ensure the asset is not marginalized.

Recognize that asset and configuration are key to audit and governance success. Establish a partnership between these teams from the beginning and take care to ensure audit, compliance, and governance requirements are reflected in both the Service and Configuration Strategy from Step 1 in Figure 10.1, and in the Configuration Management Plan. This influence becomes a natural part of the plan if included from the beginning but very difficult to add later as an afterthought.
