As the Powers headed down the winding road towards the village, Mr Beasley and Fitzhugh watched them through the museum’s front window.

‘Do you think they’ll bite, Mr Beasley?’

‘Bite? They’ll swallow it whole, Fitzhugh. Hook, line and sinker. Once that tall ship comes down from Galway for the weekend, they’ll be on it like wasps on a jam jar. Wreaking havoc.’

‘I don’t know. That young one seems a dark horse.’

‘Hah. She’s a fool. Like the rest of them. Remember when we robbed the Book of Smells from St Malodourous College and the Powers got on the case? The famous Powers. They caused a thunderstorm inside the college library and soaked all those rare books. And that stupid little boy flew through a precious stained-glass window. Caused such a ruckus we got away no problem. Well, it will be the same this time around.’

‘If you say so, sir.’

‘Once they go after the tall ship, every man and woman in the Garda, navy and coast guard will be busy dealing with the chaos. We’ll sail out of here like a couple of fishermen.’

‘Genius, sir.’

‘Is the boat fully loaded?’

‘It is.’

‘All treasure on board?’

‘Every piece.’

‘Excellent. We’ll be rich, Fitzhugh, filthy rich. The Book of Smells. The Gangrene Gargoyle. The Cross of Ballyuseless. All worth millions. And after we meet our Russian friends in Montenegro we can retire to a tropical island and never have to work again. Think of what your five per cent will buy you.’

‘I thought you said ten per cent.’

‘Don’t be greedy, Fitzhugh. You couldn’t possibly spend five per cent of what we’ll be making. Not in the whole of the rest of your sad, miserable little life.’

‘What about the museum, sir?’

‘The museum? Let the town take it over. See if they can earn back that pathetic grant they gave us. Maybe they can give tours to the local yokels and finish by telling them the story of the dastardly Edwin Beasley, the greatest pirate of them all.’

His evil laugh filled the museum. His gold tooth glinted. Far ahead, Suzie, walking at the rear of the family’s single file, glanced back at them over her shoulder.
