On the flip side of that sentiment is Neil LaBute’s controversial first film. (As opposed, I suppose, to all of his subsequent controversial films.)

That film, In the Company of Men, is a 1997 black comedy-drama. It tells the story of two white-collar businessmen, Chad and Howard, who hatch a cruel plan to emotionally terrorize and manipulate a vulnerable, deaf woman they both meet. The film follows their journey as they carry out their plan, and the effects it has on all three of their lives.

Some audiences have come away from the movie appalled, more than anything else, by the fact that (spoiler alert!) Chad gets away scot-free and doesn't pay for his horrible behavior.

However, for LaBute, that was the whole point:

“I felt that it was truer to the story that Chad goes unpunished. A lot of people are more keen to give what the audience wants, which isn’t always the truth, it’s perhaps more what they’ve come to expect.

“We’ve been conditioned from childhood to expect good to triumph over evil. When someone subverts that a bit, people can get rubbed the wrong way. But all the Chads in this world don’t get caught. To spend ninety minutes being creative, and then five dashing it all by making the audience feel good about themselves isn’t worth it to me.”
