The silver moonlight in this sentence is one of the many examples of Fitzgerald’s use of color. Silver and gold (or yellow), colors of wealth, recur again and again in his books, associated especially with vulgar displays of affluence. Daisy’s color is white. She wears white dresses and recalls her “white girlhood.” This helps characterize her as the unattainable “enchanted princess” who incarnates from Gatsby’s dream.

The reader watches the rising moon and hears the tinny drip of the banjoes on the lawn. The details are true to the thematic ground in which the story plays out. At the same time, the words that express those details ring with wealth and affluence. The one tiny reference to “trembling” plants a question about the described rich life with little solace but the beauty of the setting.
