Choosing a Journal

Choosing a journal for your manuscript can be a difficult task. New physician-scientists often make the mistake of submitting their articles to journals that are too low in caliber. The caliber of a journal is often assessed by its impact factor, which indicates the frequency with which articles from a given journal are cited. A given journal’s impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of current-year citations of articles published in that journal by the number of articles published in the journal over the previous two years (Tables 10.2). Journal impact factors are accessible on the web. Publishing your article in a high-impact journal is more advantageous to your career than publishing it in a low-impact journal. Why not start with a high-impact journal, even though it may not be accepted? Although your chances of being published in a high-impact journal may be small, there is no harm in submitting your manuscripts to these journals and it is often worthwhile. There is one reason for this; it may be accepted! If so, it would be a shame to have published in a low-impact journal instead. Table 10.2Impact factor 2008: top 10
