Epidemiology

Acute heart failure is one of the most common reasons for patients older than 65 years to be hospitalized, and these patients represent a significant mortality risk in the months after discharge. Pulmonary edema is common in patients who present with acute heart failure. A systematic review of 23 acute heart failure trials determined the prevalence of pulmonary edema to range from 75% to 83%.1 Individual risk factors for pulmonary edema are the same as those for the underlying disease, in this case, hypertensive heart disease and heart failure.
