One of the greatest alchemists - certainly my favourite - was also one of the last. He wrote under the name Eirenaeus Philalethes, but his identity is unknown. In his treatise An Open Entrance to the Shut Palace of the King (1669 edition), he claims to have attained the Philosophers' Stone in 1645 at the age of twenty-three. He promises us the plainest description yet of alchemy's secret, which he calls the `Sophick mercury', or `our water' (compounded, typically, of `fire'). An Open Entrance was Newton's bedside reading for twenty years. His copy, annotated on every page, can be seen in the British Library.
