Chapter Thirteen
Pippa ate breakfast with her family, wondering what she was going to do today. She had never thought about that when she was in the country. She had simply gone wherever the spirit moved her.
Lord Hopewell had changed all that.
She was frustrated with herself because she could not stop thinking about the irresistible viscount. It had been a week since she had last seen him, and he dominated her waking thoughts. She still had no idea of when he might return from town and wasnât sure that she wanted to give him riding lessons anymore.
A footman entered the breakfast room and whispered something to Forrester. The butler smoothly moved to Mama.
âNews has arrived from the tenants, my lady. Mrs. Foster has given birth to a healthy boy.â
âThen I finished the blanket I knitted for the babe just in time,â Georgie declared. âI should take it to her today.â Her twin looked to her. âWould you like to go with me, Pippa?â
âOf course,â she said, thinking she had nothing better to do than mope about, hoping to receive word from Hopewood of the viscountâs return.
âI want to go, too,â Mirella said. âWe can take food from Cook to the family. May I be excused, Mama? I will go and tell Cook what we need.â
âYes, my darling,â Mama said.
Half an hour later, they were ready to head to the Fostersâ cottage. They decided to take a horse and cart since it would be too difficult to carry on horseback all that Cook had provided for them. Pippa had a groom saddle a horse to a cart and after two footmen had loaded the contents into its bed, the three sisters set out.
When they arrived, they were warmly greeted by Mr. Foster, who beamed with pride, being a first-time father.
âYou should see how perfect he is, my ladies,â the father said. âAnd you have brought an abundance of things for us. You are very kind to think of us.â
âWe are happy to do so, Mr. Foster,â Georgie said. âMay we come inside and see your wife and the babe?â
âCome with me,â the farmer said, lifting the large pot of stew Cook had provided. âIâll come back for the rest.â
They entered the cottage and found the new mother nursing her babe. She was thrilled by their visit and shared that her labor had been long but without complications. Pippa still didnât quite understand all that it took to become with child, much less how the child came out. Maybe it was time to press Mama to explain such matters to her.
After burping her newborn, Mrs. Foster asked, âWould any of you like to hold him? We have yet to name him.â
It didnât surprise her when Georgie spoke up. âI would.â
The new mother handed over her babe, and Georgie held the sleeping infant gingerly, gazing down at him with a soft smile.
They talked a bit about things happening in the neighborhood, and then Georgie looked to Pippa.
âWould you like to hold him?â
She wasnât sure if she wanted to or not, but agreed to do so, mostly to please her sister.
