SHOPPING FOR PALEO

Shopping as a new Paleoite can be a daunting prospect. Our body seems to be hard-wired to crave those things that we have told it that it may not have, and while you detox the bad stuff out of your body, seeing it sitting temptingly on the shelves of the grocery store can crumble the resolve of even the strongest willed people in seconds. In the early days, it is very easy to fall off the wagon, so you need to implement some new routines before attempting to go to the shops.

The number one golden rule of Paleo shopping is to NEVER go to the shops when you are hungry—EVER! The candy will call out to you—I promise! The best thing to do is to set it up as routine that shopping always happens after a filling, wholesome, and nutritious Paleo meal because I can assure you if you go there hungry, by the time you reach the checkout, you will be halfway through your second caramel candy bar! You will suffer from guilt-induced shame and hate yourself for days afterwards while enduring severe mental self-flagellation where you call yourself all manner of ugly names. It would be SO much easier if they just had Paleo-friendly stores, wouldn’t it?

Don’t be discouraged—it won’t be that hard all the time. As you become a seasoned Paleoite and start to actually feel the difference in your body, the temptations will lessen, and shopping will no longer be fraught with cravings and nerves. Because this diet relies chiefly on consuming fresh produce, you can run a real risk of food going off before you have a chance to cook it if you don’t plan properly. But if you are clever, it needn’t break the bank and require you to take out a second mortgage on your home! Personally, I find the best way to shop for Paleo is weekly. That way your ingredients are always fresh, and you have minimal wastage especially if you have planned your meals in advance and drawn up a shopping list and a budget. When you set off to the shops, leave your credit card at home and make sure you have only enough money to buy what you need—this keeps impulse spending on non-Paleo items in check.

Now while you can find most Paleo staples in your local supermarket or health shop, for me there is no better place to shop for Paleo than your local farmers’ market. Most markets run weekly and stock the freshest of fresh organic produce. While it is not an absolute requirement that your food is only organic, it is recommended to buy organic and free-range as often as possible. The commercially grown produce and
