MUSCLE TESTING—LOWER TRAPEZIUS

Flexibility Testing: Looking at the flexibility of the rotator cuff will help determine the extent of the strain to this muscle group along with which exercises should be performed to resolve the strain. To test the flexibility of the rotator cuff, you will again need your helper. Raise your arm on the painful side out to the side up to shoulder height and bend your elbow 90 degrees, keeping your forearm and palm facing down. Your helper will stand at the elbow of your outstretched arm and place one hand at the back of your shoulder and the inside of his or her elbow under your elbow. The goal here is to stabilize your upper arm. With the other hand, he or she will begin to apply pressure to the top of your wrist. You will not resist this. Your helper will continue this pressure, rotating your shoulder while circling your forearm down but keeping your upper arm in place. This test should be performed slowly, and as soon as pain is elicited, the position of the shoulder rotation should be noted.
