People who are looking for a spiritual soporific don’t pray the Psalms, or at least don’t pray them for very long. The Psalms are full of unsettling enemy talk. God is the primary subject in the Psalms, but enemies are established in solid second place.11

Psalm 18 is illustrative. The psalm opens with a note to the worship leader, which includes language of enemies: “A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD, who addressed the words of this song to the LORD on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul” (v. 1). The psalmist finds himself in danger and pleads to the Lord for help: “I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies” (v. 3).

Following a vivid description of his harrowing condition, the psalmist exclaims at mid-point: “He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me” (v. 17). The psalmist professes his commitment to follow the Lord’s ways faithfully, with integrity (vv. 20–23). He confesses God’s protection and provision (vv. 24–36). And he asserts God’s power to save (v. 37): “I pursued my enemies and overtook them.”

The psalmist ends his testimony with an acclamation of praise to the Lord (vv. 46–48):
