When preparing for, performing, and interpreting multichannel urodynamics, keep in mind the two basic functions being evaluated, storage, and evacuation. It is helpful to conceptualize the study in two phases: the filling phase and the voiding phase. The filling is generally referred to as filling cystometry or CMG and can also include leak point pressure tests and urethral pressure profile studies. The voiding phase is formally referred to as the pressure flow study.

Filling Cystometry

Filling cystometry is the method by which the pressure/volume relationship of the bladder is measured during bladder filling (Winters et al. 2012). Measurements obtained during filling cystometry include capacity, compliance, sensation, and stability (Table 11.4). Additionally, competency (of the urethral sphincter) is measured by way of abdominal leak point pressure or urethral pressure testing, often performed during the filling phase of urodynamics. During the filling cystometry and ALPP or UPP testing, clinician should consider five essential questions in attempt to generate meaningful urodynamics results:Table 11.4Summary of the five essential functions and their associated reportable urodynamic findings
