Tricky, Tore had said. Everything was tricky in Esther’s life these days and she would have to learn to live with that.

Dressed in her darkest clothes, her duffle bag ready next to her, she lay on her bed and stared into the darkening sky outside her window. Bertha lowed once, as if saying goodbye. It was strangely enough the only thing that pulled at her heartstrings.

The cows, both before and after, had been her solace and support. Their warm bodies, the mournful eyes and always that sense of recognizing her, even in her darkest hours. The cows had been the only creatures she’d allowed entrance to her heart, and now she had to say goodbye to them as well.

Esther’s heart and mind were strangely tranquil. For some reason, her life had never seemed more straightforward and clearer. No one else to consider, no one else to care for, no one left to love. Not even Carl, who faded more and more into the shadows. No time to worry about him, dead or alive. Staying alive herself was her only drive now. There was no turning back, so she put one foot before the other until she came to the entrance of Rinnan’s estate. Electric lights and jazz music flooded her way. On the driveway stood a jumble of German Mercedes’s brotherly next to black Volvos.

“Why didn’t I check earlier?” Esther thought in a panic, seeing her entire plan fall apart. She’d researched the whole situation so carefully but had not considered the possibility that Rinnan would throw a party on a Monday night.

Without having an alternative, she ducked behind the rhododendron bushes and hid her duffle bag there. She unclasped her gun belt and stuffed the revolver in the pocket of her coat. Then she waited. Checking the movements of the guests on the patio and in the brightly lit rooms of Rinnan’s house.

There was no other option but to wait, despite that this meant losing precious hours while darkness was her best disguise. She’d hoped to cover the distance to Oslo on foot before daylight. To get away from here as far as possible and to intercept Tore, who would pick her up at the farm at six. Now she was
