Chapter Twenty-Eight

The following day, Jerrick was moved to another position far distanced from where Brenna tended to her herbal concoctions by the fire. She was displeased with Mikkel for she presumed he did not approve of her becoming close to Jerrick. She knew he believed their fates were joined and that he expected they would one day be joined romantically. Yet it confused her, for Mikkel almost always avoided her and lately it seemed he barely dared to look at her.

She decided she would not allow Mikkel to determine whom she spent time with. She took note of when Jerrick was allowed his period of rest and took her allotment of food and sat with him on his wooden bench. She passed him a barley biscuit and salted fish.

“I have already been given my food this morning, Brenna.”

“You are a strong man who exerts much energy when you row, and with the waves being larger and choppier today, I have not much appetite. Torunn is still eating very little. It is not as though we will be using extra supplies. Please, if you’re inclined to want more, take some.”

“I hope you don’t experience the dreaded seasickness. It’s a burdensome plight. I’ve seen otherwise healthy men and women become so ill, they wish to be thrown to Egir the god of the sea rather than endure another moment with the ship being tossed about,” he said as he happily stuffed the food into his mouth, evidently not affected by the waves.

“I do hope not. I’ve been entirely well till now, but the sea is rougher today. Torunn carries a child so it stands to reason that she’d be ill, but I am not certain why I feel less than robust today.”

“I did not know your sister was with child. Does Mikkel know? He was always sternly opposed to the notion and always followed the rule of no women who carry a child being upon his ships. He never budged from that rule, even when one of the warriors carried and her husband was a warrior as well. It is rumored more than a few women have ended their time with child so they might continue on a journey.”

That knowledge grieved Brenna’s heart, but she replied to Jerrick.

“Mikkel does know. He has allowed Torunn to travel even knowing she is with child.”

Brenna’s thoughts returned to the women who were desperate enough to end their time with child simply to be allowed to sail, explore and pillage with the infamous Mikkel the Black.

“Perhaps because it is Brandr’s child, he has made an exception. They were raised as brothers and although there has been discord between them, there is a bond between them that cannot be broken. It is difficult for me to see why, for they are entirely different in so many ways, but I suppose being raised together has left them a part of each other, not inseparable, but perhaps unbreakable,” Jerrick said as he finished his food and spoke on.

“Brandr and Mikkel were both devastated when Hagen was washed away at sea.
