PHRASES MANAGERS SHOULD NOT USE

Up to this point, we have reviewed different ways for leaders to function effectively on the shop floor. Whether in a short conversation in the hallway or in a meeting, if managers are to gain people’s trust there are certain phrases managers should avoid. Exhibit 8.12 shows examples of such phrases compiled by Toyota.

The key phrase here, once again, is “customer orientation.” Managers need to be sensitive and be able to think from their customers’ point of view. In other words, instead of machines or systems, people must be considered to be at the center of the shop floor.
