How to Build a Burning Desire
• Think and live positively
Those who positively believe they will achieve success are far more likely to reach their goals. Part of what makes the New American Millionaire spirit is a sense that being in America, the land of opportunity, means no matter what happens, success will come to those who work. This is an overwhelmingly positive message—the veritable fuel for the burning desire. Staying positive even in the face of difficulty is therefore an essential component to passion.
According to Masoud Kermani of Kermani Consulting Group, when it comes to burning desire, positivity is paramount. “My motto in life and in business has always been, ‘What kind of service can I provide?’ ” Kermani explained. “Having a burning desire is necessary, but having a positive attitude and the right morality (or at least the ideas that you can’t hurt people on your way to your goal and that you can’t seek money at any price) is even more important. If you push your burning desire for success too much it becomes greed, and greed is rarely a component of ultimate success.”
With Kermani’s wisdom in mind, let’s explore a few tried and true methods of achieving a more positive mindset. For starters you might consider using inspirational books, audio programs, and videos. If you want to enter into a new market, absorb all the how-to information you can on it. You can surround yourself with positive visual reinforcements. If you have a sales goal, create a graphic that represents the progress on that sales goal and post it on the wall in your office. Every day you make progress, update the graphic to reflect it. In this way you can literally see how far you have come and how far you have yet to go. Finally, surround yourself with only the most positive people.
Most people interact on a daily basis with at least a few predominantly negative people. They tend to permeate working environments. The best approach is to take steps to cut them out of your life. If you have goals that seem lofty, stop sharing them with those who would respond derisively. Meanwhile ally yourself with people who are willing and apt to encourage you about your goals. These people should be the types who always ask about your progress, offer encouragement, and even volunteer to help. Bonus points if you can ally yourself with people who have already achieved the goal you’re setting out to achieve. These people serve as a constant reminder that what you’re doing is possible—and they often have a wealth of valuable advice to provide as well.
Finally, work to cut out all the negative influences in your environment. If your home or office is messy, clean it up (and keep it that way). If you have a tendency to watch depressing television programs—like the news, for example—consider changing your viewing habits. And it goes without saying, but if you have any bad habits like excessive drinking or smoking, you should take steps to drop them.
