Figure 7.6 Meditators showed a higher degree in the theta band of the right hippocampus than the control group.

The researchers found that, when looking at brain waves from the whole brain, there were no real differences between the meditators and the control group. However, when they started to compare specific regions of the brain, they observed that the meditators showed a higher degree in the theta band of the right hippocampus than the control group (Figure 7.6).

The higher degree means that the hippocampus may be more connected to the rest of the resting network or more prominent in meditators than in the controls. The authors argue that this finding suggests that the hippocampus plays a key role in Vipassana meditation, which has been shown in other studies examining the brains of meditators (Lardone et al., 2018). Since the finding was only in the right hippocampus, the scientists speculate that this result could be because the right and left hippocampus function in slightly different ways or that they demonstrate different patterns of connectivity (Lardone et al., 2018).
