The second battleship named after the State of Washington was completed in May 1941 and spent the majority of the war in heavy combat operations in the Pacific. Amazingly, Washington (BB-56) was never hit by enemy fire. The battleship was, however, heavily damaged in a collision with the USS Indiana (BB-58) in early 1944 and sailed to Puget Sound Navy Yard to receive a new bow. (Puget Sound Navy Museum.)

When the cruiser USS Omaha (CL-4) was launched on December 14, 1920, it was the longest vessel to be built in the Pacific Northwest. It was also the first ship built in Puget Sound to slide down its slipway bow first when it was launched from the Todd Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company’s Tacoma shipyards. On November 6, 1941, the Omaha assisted in the capture of the disguised German freighter Odenwald in the Atlantic. After service in World War II, the Omaha was scrapped. (Author’s collection.)
