Step 1: Particular words and phrases

The first step of this conversation involves asking the witness(es) to identify what words and phrases they were most drawn to in the conversation. A witness who is not accustomed to this type of conversation may start giving opinions and reflections very quickly, but the purpose of this stage is to assist the witness in being focused on the person who was the centre of the interview, by highlighting the actual words the person used. In asking this of Diane, she mentioned that she had been drawn to things Hiedi had said about wanting to ‘do for’ Kim. She said, for example, that Hiedi had said, ‘I think what I’ll do …’, and she suggested that this seemed like a battle for Hiedi. Asking her to stick with the words and phrases Hiedi had used, rather than imagining what they implied yet, Diane said that throughout the conversation she had been drawn to the phrase ‘different normal’ that Hiedi had used. She said that when I had mentioned that Hiedi seemed to sparkle as she talked about Kim’s excitement about being ‘different normal’ in her work, the word ‘sparkle’ had also jumped out at her. Furthermore, she said she was drawn to words about balance that Hiedi had used to explain what Kim seemed to be attempting to juggle as a wife, mother and someone with a home-based business.

At this point we slowed down to clarify that the purpose and focus of this process in a consulting context was our consulting of Hiedi’s narrative skills, not so much an assessment of Kim. Although things resonated for Diane in the details of Kim’s experiences, as shared by Hiedi, she would attempt to focus on what she was drawn to in Hiedi’s work.
