Jupe Tackles the Case
âMore and more I like this whole business less and less!â Pete exploded. âI donât want any tough characters thinking we have a clue we donât have. Thereâs no telling what they might do. People like that donât listen to reason.â
âAnd we thought we were getting rid of all our troubles by getting rid of the trunkâ Bob added. âGot any ideas, Jupe?â
The Three Investigators were secluded in the workshop of the salvage yard and none of them looked happy. Even Jupiterâs round face was creased by a frown.
âIâm afraid,â he said, âthat these men, whoever they are, wonât quit until the money is found. The best way to solve our problem would be to find the money ourselves and turn it over to the police, with plenty of newspaper publicity. Then theyâd give up.â
âGreat! Just great!â Pete retorted sarcastically. âAll we have to do is find some money thatâs been hidden for years. Money that the police and the Treasury Department agents havenât been able to find. Nothing to it. Easy as falling off a log. Letâs do it before dinner so we can wrap this whole case up.â
âPeteâs right,â Bob said. âI mean, what chance have we of finding any hidden money when we donât even have a clue to it?â
âIt certainly wonât be easy,â admitted Jupiter. âBut I think we have to try. We wonât have any peace of mind until the money is found. Weâre investigators â itâll be a real challenge to us.â
Pete groaned.
âHow would we start, Jupe?â Bob asked.
âFirst we have to assume that the money is hidden somewhere here in the Los Angeles region,â Jupiter said slowly. âObviously, if itâs hidden in Chicago we havenât a chance of finding it.â
Peteâs expression said he didnât think they had a chance anyway.
âNext,â Jupiter said, âwe have to find out all we can about Spike Neelyâs actions when he was hiding out at his sisterâs house. That means we must locate the sister, Mrs. Miller, and ask her to tell us everything she can.â
âBut Chief Reynolds said the police questioned her at the time,â Bob protested. âIf they didnât learn anything, how can we?â
âI donât know,â Jupiter told him. âBut we have to try. Itâs our only lead. I know itâs a long shot, but when thereâs nothing else to do, you have to try the long shot. Just possibly we might think of some questions the police forgot to ask.â
âI wish youâd never read that piece in the paper about the auction,â Pete muttered. âAll right, how do we start?â
âFirst,â Jupiter began, but he was interrupted by his auntâs powerful voice calling to them.
âBoys! Lunch! Come and get it while itâs hot.â
Pete jumped up. âThatâs the first thing Iâve heard today that Iâve liked!â he exclaimed. âLetâs eat. Then we can think about your idea, Jupe.â
In a few minutes the boys were seated in Aunt Mathildaâs kitchen. Mrs. Jones bustled about serving them generous helpings of sausages and beans. Presently Titus Jones came in and joined them.
