Maintaining Recovery

Dairy and animal fats proved to be Bryon’s most troublesome foods. Sugar itself didn’t bother him, he discovered, but the sugar in his beloved chocolate was usually combined with fat. Now, years later, he still will not eat those prohibited foods. He tries not to eat processed foods and has a large garden where they grow organic fruits and vegetables.

Now that he has cleared up his symptoms, Bryon has found that he can eat in moderation most everything else that was once a problem for him, even gluten. He finds that careful rotation is the key.

Fruits, vegetables, and lean meat make him feel better and he continues to follow the basic guidelines of his diet. For supplements, Bryon takes a multivitamin, calcium, vitamins D and E, as well as an aspirin. He still feels more vulnerable in fall and spring, something that Dr. Swank mentions, but never explains. Bryon feels it may be the change in sunlight. Though he often gets too busy to exercise, Bryon does feel that it helps him. He is very careful not to get fatigued, saying that when he does, it takes five or six days to recover.

When he does ingest something that triggers symptoms, all Bryon feels is a little buzzing (numbness/tingling and other odd sensations of MS) that is gone in eight hours. He contrasts this to the past when symptoms went on for days on end. He says he still may get a twinge or two, but in general, the disease’s impact is very minor.
